Granted, Abilene is not really well known for it’s bike-friendly-ness. Many other cities in Texsas have excelled in accomodating the biking public (Austin, for instance). The only “dedicated” areas for biking in Abilene are paths along Judge Ely Blvd., and the newly constructed concrete paths in several area parks.
I’m perplexed, though, about signs I’ve seen along S. 11th, around the Treadaway/Oak street areas.
S. 11th is NOT bike friendly! There’s barely enough room for two traffic lanes, much less any room for bikes. That part of S. 11th is a no-can-do for bike riding, in my opinion. (The Bankhead Highway sign is another story.)
Areas of Judge Ely, and a short section of Amber/Hwy. 351 (ACU and Walmart area), DO at least have dedicated bike lanes.
Just FYI, here the City of Abilene’s Bike Plan (2015). Interesting read. I think they need a revised plan by now. This one’s 8 years old!
Do YOU bike in Abilene or elsewhere? What are your thoughts?
